Los Malaespina quedaron estigmatizados por los sermones de su padre y según fueron creciendo se fortaleció en ellos la idea de que eran unos pecadores que debían expiar todos sus pecados. Era tal su fanatismo que incluso fueron rechazados todas las veces que intentaron ingresar en diferentes órdenes religiosas. Por ello los Malaespina llegaron a la conclusión que deberían formar su propia orden religiosa, ellos tres solo, una trinidad, y los tres juntos recorrer las tierras en penitencia.
